Main duties and responsibilities

  • The Head of Service & Lead Social Worker will be responsible for the day-to-day management of those services and staff which fall within the remit of the sub directorate’s Recovery Mental Health Teams and Supported-Living in the Southern Sector of the Trust, Trust-wide Adult Mental Health Forensics Service and Approved Social Work Service (ASW).  The Recovery Service is based on the recovery ethos and aims to meet the needs of those individuals with severe and enduring mental health problems who will require longer-term care and support.
  • The postholder will be expected to provide leadership and clear direction for all aspects of the services and service improvement initiatives.  He/she will promote a culture which emphasises respect for services users and carers. He/she will ensure that all staff work together on a multi-disciplinary basis provide high quality mental health services in-keeping with the standards of the Regional Mental Health Care Pathway ‘You in Mind’ (HSCB 2014) .  The postholder will support the implementation of the recommendations within the DoH Regional Mental Health Strategy and any other relevant directives.
  • As Lead Social Worker for AMH the postholder will also be responsible for the oversight of   social work practice and development across the sub directorate and for ensuring appropriate supervision for all social work staff through the agreed professional structure. They will provide professional advice on social work matters as necessary.
  • Operationally the post holder will report to the Assistant Director of Community Mental Health Services. Professionally the postholder is responsible to and receives supervision from the   Assistant Director - Governance SW/Social Care who is the Directorate Social Work Lead and accountable to the Executive Director of Social Work.
  • The post will ensure the monitoring of agreed policies, protocols and standards in relation to all staff within their span of authority. The postholder will ensure that social work staff specifically discharge their duties in relation to the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986, and Mental Capacity (NI) Act 2016 effectively and professionally and will also ensure that all relevant staff comply with their responsibilities in relation to the Children Order (NI) 1995, and compliance with the regional Adult Safeguarding Policy.
  • The Postholder will advise the Assistant Directors on matters pertaining to the deployment, training and professional accountability of all social workers within Adult Mental Health services and contribute to the Trust’s annual report on its delegated statutory functions.
  • The postholder will participate on the on-call rota for the Adult Mental Health and Disability Services Directorate.
