Job summary

The Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant Haematologist post (full time, 10PAs). The purpose this post is to provide an effective and efficient Haematology service of optimal quality within the resources available to WHSCT. Any candidate who is unable to work full-time for personal reasons will still be eligible for appointment. The post holder will complement the existing team of 3 Consultants within the Haematology Department (with an additional current vacancy). The post holder will participate in an on-call rota and also deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

The successful candidate will, if desired, have the opportunity of undertaking two Academic (research or teaching) PAs per week in the School of Medicine at Ulster University (with appropriate honorary academic status at senior lecturer or professorial level as appropriate). This is an exciting opportunity to join an established haematology team at WHSCT and to develop research or teaching interests in collaboration with academic colleagues at Ulster University.

Main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide a professional clinical and laboratory Haematology service for the WHSCT.
  • Provide comprehensive written diagnostic reports on blood films and bone marrow aspirates/ trephine biopsies.
  • Be available for direct consultation on cases with primary care and secondary care clinical colleagues.
  • Be a core member of the Northern & Western Haematology MDT.
  • Be responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan.
  • Undertake, with other Haematologists, the professional supervision, management and training of both trainee medical staff and biomedical scientists.
  • Participate in the consultant appraisal process.
  • The post holder will be required to agree a job plan with the lead Haematology Consultant and Clinical Director within three months of taking up the appointment. One would expect the appointee to have not more than 1PA for MDM.
  • Provide cover during normal working hours (9am to 5pm mon-fri) for colleagues during approved periods of annual / study / sick leave.
  • Participate in the Consultant Haematologist on-call rota (currently 1 in 6 rota without prospective cover).
  • Perform out-reach clinics/ laboratory visits at SWAH and Omagh.
  • Support and contribute as a recognised clinical teacher to 3rd year medical undergraduate teaching.
  • Participate in departmental educational meetings, including those involving biomedical scientists.
  • Share in administrative and management duties associated with the department and be conversant with the standards of MHRA and UKAS.
  • Participate in continuing medical education and in research programmes as appropriate and enrol in a recognised programme of Continued Professional Development.
  • Undertake such other duties as may be agreed in relation to services provided by the Clinical Director of Laboratory Medicine for other agencies.
  • Participate in audit and the Clinical & Research Governance Framework of the Western HSC Trust.
  • Participate in and contribute to Haematology morbidity and mortality meetings.
  • Contribute to the running of an effective transfusion service as part of the Hospital Transfusion team/ Transfusion committee as required.
