Job summary
This is a replacement post. Its role is to share in the collective responsibility for provision of services to patients within the Paediatric department. A subspecialty to complement the current team would be encouraged (Current specialties include Allergy, Respiratory, Diabetes, Adoption and Fostering, Neonatology and Neurodisability). The successful candidate would be supported in developing an appropriate specialty if further training was required.
The successful candidate will complete a team of six consultant Paediatricians in the Western Trust (Southern Sector). This consists of four hospital based consultants and two joint hospital/community posts.
The Consultant team provide the full range of inpatient and outpatient Paediatric services within the Fermanagh, Omagh and southern sector of Strabane geographical areas. This will include a “one in six on-call” with prospective cover responsibility in the South West Acute Hospital Enniskillen. The post holder will participate in both general Paediatric and neonatal care.
The team of community paediatricians provide a wide range of community paediatric medical services which include Neurodisability/Complex Needs, Developmental Paediatrics, Educational Medicine, Adoption and Looked After medical services and Paediatric Palliative Care. The team has close links with the Trust’s ASD and ADHD services, with several members of the team having shared job plans with these teams; as well as with Community Children’s Nursing, LD CAMHS, Allied Health Professionals, Social Services, Health Visiting, Educational Psychology and many others.
The post-holder would be expected to provide clinical leadership within the team and alongside the existing consultants. There are opportunities to improve the patient experience and quality of care of children with neurodisability, special educational needs and safeguarding needs. Other special interests which fit with the current needs of the department would be encouraged. One
area which we hope to develop is that of transition of young people with complex needs into Adult Services.
Main responsibilities
- The post holder will participate in provision of inpatient and outpatient Paediatric/neonatal medical services at the South West Acute Hospital (SWAH) and for out-patient Paediatric medical services at Omagh Heath & Primary Care Complex (OH&PCC). They will participate in provision of consultant level Community Paediatric services at SWAH and OHPCC.
- Participation in the acute “on-call” rota at SWAH with five other consultant Paediatricians.
- Provide specialist paediatric assessment; investigation and management of children referred with concerns regarding development or disability, including appropriate referral onwards to various services.
- Undertake consultant led clinics and provide support to junior staff and other colleagues.
- Collaborate closely with other relevant services including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, ASD Service, LD CAMHS and acute paediatrics.
- Take part in multi-disciplinary meetings regarding a variety of conditions.
- Liaise with the Education Authority and Educational Psychology colleagues, and contribute to the medical aspect of the statementing process / assessment of children with special educational needs.
- This work will be performed predominantly in the Child Development Unit where there is a multi-disciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, community children’s nurses, continence nurses and school nurses. Regular multidisciplinary clinics/discussions are held for children with complex health or development needs encompassing community paediatrics, dietetics, community dental service, orthoptics, AHPs and health visiting.
- Contribute to the on-call (within hours) rota for safeguarding duties in the department.
- Contribute as a member of the safeguarding team to the development of internal safeguarding/child protection policy, guidelines, and protocols.
- Effectively communicate local safeguarding knowledge, research and findings from audits and challenge poor practice.
- Facilitate and contribute to own-organisation audits, multi-agency audits and statutory inspections.
- Work effectively with colleagues from other organisations, providing advice as appropriate.
- Provide safeguarding/child protection supervision.
