Job summary

The WHSCT wishes to appoint a 1 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist to work in the Omagh Community Teams. The post holder will work within the multidisciplinary teams to deliver an integrated primary care liaison and recovery mental health service for the adult population of 18-65 year olds within the Omagh area, catchment population 55,000 approx.

The consultant appointed to the Omagh Community Teams will be required to provide expert assessment and advice to the team regarding all mental health presentations to the service

Clinical Tasks

The post holder will ensure a high standard of work and also attend to the administration and organisation of their service.

  • The post holder shall, through leadership, encourage and maintain multi-disciplinary work within their workplace.
  • The post holder will liaise with medical practitioners, psychologists, social workers, nurses and others in order to ensure a high standard in provision of services.
  • The post holder will be expected to liaise with medical staff within and across Trusts and with commissioners in matters concerning DHSSPS planning, teaching and further education.
  • 1.5 (WTE) Programme Activities will be made available for audit and continuing professional development, and the post holder will be expected to engage in medical and clinical audit, resource management, and will collect and maintain adequate service statistics in order to develop and further the evolution of their services.
  • The post holder will assist with the provision of teaching and clinical supervision for medical students, medical post-graduate students and others receiving training in mental health services. He/she may be expected to provide supervision for one or more postgraduate trainees in addition to providing clinical supervision for members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Main role responsibilities

  • The post holder will be expected to be approved as a Responsible Medical Officer under Part II of the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986, subject to Part II approval by the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (or an equivalent body) or be willing to undertake training to obtain this.
  • To maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council and comply in particular with the GMC’s guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time. The post holder will maintain registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Participate in clinical governance, clinical audit/research, medical advisory committees and other committees as may be necessary.
  • Engagement in medical audit and utilise service data in order to develop and further evolve their sessions.
  • Carry out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in the job plan or rota including keeping records and the provision of reports, the proper delegation of tasks and maintaining skills and knowledge.
  • The post holder will ensure their own continuing professional development (CPD) and the WHSCT will support and fund this. The post holder will be required to undertake such continuing educational activities as are necessary to remain accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • The post holder will maintain their own continuing professional development in line with the Trust’s strategy on Clinical Governance.
  • In conjunction with their Consultant colleagues the post holder will provide professional supervision to the other medical staff where appropriate. The post holder will ensure that junior medical staff time and duties are managed in a manner which best suits the needs of the service and their ongoing training. This may include General or Speciality Psychiatric trainees, and the post holder will liaise closely with NIMDTA to ensure that the trainees’ educational needs are met appropriately. The post holder may act as an Educational Supervisor overseeing training of junior staff and being the initial source of advice for doctors regarding their career.
  • The post holder will be expected to contribute to undergraduate, post-graduate and other continuing medical educational activity within the Trust. This may include teaching, examination and accreditation duties. As part of an agreed job plan the post holder may wish to contribute to wider undergraduate and post-graduate medical educational activity within Northern Ireland.
  • The post holder will cover consultant colleagues’ periods of leave as necessary and in line with prospective cover arrangements as per the contract. Reciprocal cover will be available.
