Job summary
This new Speciality Doctor post in Respiratory Medicine is to support the established Ambulatory Respiratory Unit in Altnagelvin Hospital. This unit – ‘The Respiratory Hub’ offers rapid diagnostics and respiratory assessments and treatments for patients, primarily as an alternative to an inpatient hospital stay. This is a full time post – Mon-Friday 9am – 5pm.
The successful candidate, upon employment, will have access to an office with a Trust computer (desktop/laptop) and relevant IT equipment to carry out their job seamlessly and access to all relevant IT systems.
The successful employee will have support to carry out the administrative duties in a timely manner.
Job purpose
- To provide a high quality, effective and efficient Respiratory service within the contract resources available to the Western HSC Trust.
- To provide an efficient and effective Respiratory service to meet the needs of the population.
Main responsibilities
- The post holder will be responsible for the clinical assessment and management of patients referred to the Consultant-led Respiratory Ambulatory Unit (Respiratory Hub). There are 7 clinics per week - approximately 6 patients per clinic – both New and Review patients.
- The post holder will be expected to train in pleural procedures performed in an ambulatory setting ie. Thoracic ultrasound, pleural fluid aspiration and chest drain insertion and management.
- Triage patient referrals to the Respiratory Hub
- Provide advice on the management of Respiratory conditions in both the community ie. via the Community Respiratory Team (CRT) and in-hospital ie. patients referred by the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education when medical students and junior doctors take part in Respiratory Hub placements.
- Provide clinical leadership to junior staff and set standards of care.
- Adhere to professional and clinical policies and procedures within the Speciality
- Contribute to the Trust’s Appraisal system and take part in the annual specialty doctor Job planning process
- Participation in Departmental and Inter-departmental meetings
- The post-holder will participate in the audit activity of the Respiratory Ambulatory Unit and attend/participate in Respiratory service meetings which include audit and governance issues.
- The post-holder will fulfil the relevant commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and practice evidence-based medicine and effective team working within the multi-disciplinary team
