Job summary

To provide specialist cardiology services as part of the provision of acute medical services within the Medical Division, Acute Services Directorate, Western Health and Social Care Trust and to contribute to the development of excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and participation in clinical and social care governance.

Main role responsibilities

  • The successful applicant will promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork within the specialty and will communicate effectively with all agencies and personnel involved in providing cardiology services.
  • Will work together with his/her cardiology colleagues in the further development of cardiology services in the area.
  • Will hold outpatient clinics as required for patients within the specialty group and will be responsible along with the other consultants for providing non-invasive cardiology procedures and providing care for acute and convalescent cardiology patients.
  • Will be responsible for providing non-invasive cardiology procedures and cardiac catheterisation and will develop same in keeping with medical advances.
  • To provide specialist cardiology services as part of the cardiology network of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, working principally at Altnagelvin Hospital and at Omagh Hospital.
  • To work with colleagues in Altnagelvin Hospital and Trustwide to provide an evidence-based, guideline driven acute and convalescent inpatient and outpatient cardiology services.
  • To further develop and take responsibility for provision of a subspecialty interest in cardiology which will be advantageous to the local population across the geography of the trust and complementary to the services provided by existing medical staff.
  • To further develop the cardiology research within the current Western Trust Research Network and also linking with the Northern Ireland Cardiovascular Research Network.
  • To promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork within the speciality.
  • To further develop the current networks (both within the Trust and within NI), and also develop innovative, efficient and effective ways of working to best serve the interests of cardiology patients from the Western Trust catchment area, in keeping with the strategic vision of the Trust and the NI cardiology network.
  • To promote the work of national and international societies such as British Cardiovascular Society, Irish Cardiac Society, European Society of Cardiology by promotion and implementation of evidence based international guidelines.
  • The post holder will work with the other consultant cardiologists in providing a comprehensive general cardiology service for inpatients and outpatients from the Western Trust catchment area.
  • The post holder will further develop the cardiology service in the fields of primary and secondary prevention for the whole of the Trust area.
  • The post holder will have clinical responsibility and accountability for the continuous care of his/her patients in Altnagelvin hospital and cover for SWAH (out of hours consultant on-call cover is provided by the on-call physician in close liaison with the consultant cardiology staff in Altnagelvin). The post holder will participate on the weekend coronary care and acute cardiology ward round rota in Altnagelvin on a 1 in 6 basis. There is no general medical commitment or responsibility with this post.
  • There is a separate rota for interventional cardiology which the postholder will not be asked to contribute to.
  • The post holder will work as an integral part of the Trust cardiology network.
  • The post holder must ensure appropriate standards of care for patients and appropriate standards of education and training for medical staff in training.
