Job summary

The post holder will work alongside other junior clinical fellows, Foundation Year doctors, foundation fellowship doctors, Internal Medicine Trainees and Higher Specialist Trainees and Specialty Doctors in oncology within a supportive, approachable team structure including ward nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and the wider subspecialty medical teams. All patient care is supervised by subspecialty consultants.

Main responsibilities

The principal duties of the posts will be:

  • To undertake care of oncology patients presenting as an emergency and following inpatient admission. You will work across clinical teams, specifically: Medical oncology subspecialty teams and Clinical oncology subspecialty teams
  • To undertake daily or as needed patient reviews for inpatients including co-ordination and review of investigations, discharge planning and liaison with and referral to other clinical teams
  • To prescribe treatments including blood products, supportive care including non-SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) treatments, fluids, electrolytes and symptomatic therapies
  • Opportunity to gain experience in undertaking procedures relevant to oncology
  • To cross cover planned and unplanned leave of other junior doctors including where needed in other specialties within the care group
  • To undertake care of patients undergoing clinical trials, showing evidence of training and understanding of Good Clinical Practice. Where required, appropriate training in clinical trial protocols will be provided
  • To engage in the care groups clinical governance programme, including, for example, audit, clinic incident reporting and quality meetings
  • Attendance at the oncology clinics where time permits and subject to the interests and experience of the postholder
  • If interested, to participate in the collection and analysis of local data with a view to preparing and submitting papers for publication.
