Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established Microbiology team that has a high clinical profile in the WHSCT. The successful candidate/s/s will join our Consultant Medical Microbiologists and Consultant in Infectious Diseases.

Main responsibilities

The successful candidate/s will:

  • Provide in collaboration with the existing Consultant Medical Microbiologists, Consultants in Infectious Diseases, and a professional, diagnostic and consultative service in Medical Microbiology to the population of the HSCT. This service will include participation in the provision of Infection Control services to Western Trust facilities within the area.
  • Work in conjunction with the other Consultant Medical Microbiologists and Consultants in Infectious Diseases, to provide an on-site sessional commitment to the Southern Sector.
  • Share responsibility with the other Consultant Medical Microbiologists and Consultant in Infectious Diseases for the day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens, and authorisation and interpretation of the results obtained. This includes the selection and monitoring of referral laboratory results.
  • Participate in the development of departmental policies and SOPs.
  • Share responsibility with the other Consultant Medical Microbiologists and Consultants in Infectious Diseases for the satisfactory participation in external quality assurance schemes.
  • Liaise with medical staff in other boards where necessary to help provide and develop a comprehensive service for the population of the WHSCT. Such activities may include taking part in regional and DHSS level groups and committees, as was well as teaching and further education programmes.
  • Assist with the maintenance of full accreditation of the Microbiology department with the appropriate regulatory and accreditation bodies.
  • Contribute to Business Planning within the department including the introduction of new diagnostic methods, and forward planning for staff and equipment.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours on-call service in Microbiology with the other Consultant Medical Microbiologists and Consultants in Infectious Diseases, on a frequency agreed with the Trust Senior Management.
  • Have such administrative or managerial duties as may be delegated by the Lead Clinician for Pathology and/or Assistant Director.
  • Act as Clinical Lead for Microbiology on a rotational basis
