Job summary

This is a full time post with an emphasis on anaesthetic services based at Altnagelvin Hospital with day case sessions available in Omagh Hospital and perioperative sessions in the newly founded PACU in Altnagelvin.

The post holder will join a team of Consultants in Anaesthesia in providing Anaesthetic Services throughout the Trust.

This is a full time post, however applications from practitioners who wish to contract for a reduced number of planned activities, or on a job share basis are welcome.

Role responsibilities

  • To provide anaesthetic services complementing the existing General Anaesthesia Consultants and service needs. This will include participating in the general anaesthesia on-call rota.
  • The Job Plan consists of a 11 Programmed Activities (PA) contract with 7.5 PAs of Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for core activities including CPD, job planning and appraisal and 2 PA allocation for on call. Direct Clinical Care duties will include preoperative assessment and postoperative management of patients.
  • The Anaesthetic Department is regularly involved in the teaching of Nurses, undergraduate Medical students and Paramedical staff, in addition to Anaesthetic trainees.
  • It is essential that the post holder be committed to working alongside colleagues in the specialty in order to enhance and support the Directorate, which is led by the Clinical Lead (Dr Vinanti Cherian McIvor). This will involve attendance at Directorate meetings and willingness to progress developments or quality initiatives agreed by the directorate. Annual job appraisal is implemented throughout the Trust.
  • Additional PA’s may be offered if required by the commissioners. The current Job Plan is outlined below but may change to meet the needs of the new appointee and the constantly changing needs of the Directorate. The successful candidate will participate in an on-call rota with other Consultants.
  • The successful candidate will have continuing responsibility for patients under their care and for the proper functioning of the department, including teaching and administrative duties. All Consultants are required to take part in and attend regular clinical audit.

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Provide a general and sub specialty anaesthetic service, in conjunction with and complementing the existing Consultants and the needs of the service. This will involve the provision of anaesthesia for elective and emergency inpatient care, day cases, outpatient services and ambulatory care of urgent cases.
  • Participate in the general anaesthesia emergency on call rota. The out of hours responsibilities may include an on-site on call evening and weekend rota. Prospective cover for colleagues is currently provided.
  • Ensure the supervision of junior medical staff to ensure that clinical standards are maintained.
  • Provide continuing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the needs of the directorate.
  • Assist in the delivery and integration of teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate level, by undertaking specific teaching and examining duties as may be appropriate.
  • The post-holder will be expected to comply with the Trust’s arrangements for undergoing clinical appraisal and revalidation.
  • The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the development of anaesthetic services in the Trust.
