Contract and Hours: Temporary, Fullt Time (48hpw  12PAs) A waiting list may be established for the next 12 months should another similar post arise.

Job summary

The southern sector of the Western Trust provides services to a population of approximately 115,000 and is responsible for the provision of a complete range of Health and Social Care services in hospital and in the community.

The successful candidate will be part of a team of 6 consultants, 8 specialty doctors, and 7 junior tier ST1/ST2 equivalent doctors including 2 trainees. The specialty doctors provide support for the consultant team, as well as supervision for the junior doctors. Duties will include a full range of obstetric and gynaecological services at the South West Acute Hospital (SWAH), as well as out-patient clinics and day case surgery at Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex (26 miles from Enniskillen).

The speciality doctors share a rota with ST3 equivalent grade doctors. The rota is a 1:7 currently with plans to move to 1:8, full shift, residential, second on-call rota. 

Main responsibilities

  • Share the responsibility for continuity of care under the supervision of Consultant Obstetrician.
  • Participate in the middle tier rota which covers the 24/7 working of the Maternity and Gynaecology services at SWAH & OHPCC.
  • Participate in the provision of Outpatient clinics
  • The candidate would have regular labour ward sessions and be expected to mentor junior trainees.
  • Be involved in the organisation of the teaching rota aimed at MRCOG and participating in the running of local multidisciplinary team courses. 
  • Provide assessment, investigative and diagnostic services to women referred to the unit.
  • Initiate and monitor treatments.
  • Arrange admission of women to inpatient unit or transfer to regional unit as required.
  • Provide central communication link with other health care colleagues in the hospital and primary care teams.
  • Provide medical support during transfer of patients as required.
  • Participate in a 1:7 rota. (tier 2-middle tier), moving to 1in 8 when staffing permits.
  • Participate in maintaining clinical and other required documentation to professional standards.
  • Participate in Quality improvement and service development.
  • Participate in clinical and professional audit as agreed.
  • Liaison with other clinical/investigative departments as required.
  • Be aware of responsibilities and required response in Major Emergency Incidents.
  • Adhere to all Department, Trust and Professional standards as required.
