Job summary

The post-holder will provide, in collaboration with three full-time consultant psychiatrists, a service for the assessment, diagnosis and management of mental illness in patients over 65 years and all adults with dementia (or suspected dementia).

The post holder will provide an Old Age Psychiatry Service to the population of West Tyrone and Fermanagh catchment areas

There will be community and inpatient duties included in the role involving occasional input into the management of acute mental health patients and dementia patients in Oak villa and Ash Villa in the Tyrone and Fermanagh hospital. The post holder will also have a role in assessing patients referred to the Psychiatric Liaison Service for Older People from South West Acute hospital in Enniskillen and Omagh hospital in collaboration with the Consultant Psychiatrist and the Liaison Nurse.

Main responsibilities

  • Provision with Consultant Supervisors of an Old Age Psychiatry Service, with responsibility for the assessment and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the service.
  • Provision of out-patient Services which will include home visits to patients unable to attend out-patient locations and visits to review patients in community-based facilities. The majority of outpatients (approximately 90%) will be reviews/follow ups.
  • In collaboration with the Consultant Psychiatrist and the Liaison Nurse provision of a Psychiatric Liaison Service for Older People to the Omagh and South West Acute hospitals.
  • Responsibility for appropriate administrative duties in a timely fashion and according to service protocols.
  • Collaboration with Consultant colleagues in the medical management of the Western Trust Old Age Psychiatry Service and the Mental Health Service overall, including deputizing for Consultants at multi-disciplinary meetings and out-patient clinics as necessary.
  • Participation with others in the future development of a comprehensive Old Age Psychiatry Service to this catchment area in line with the NI Dementia Strategy / regional mental health strategy.
  • Co-ordinate with consultant colleagues and other medical staff around plans for annual, study, professional/examination leave and compensatory rest and adhere to the Trust Leave policy in respect of notice. Ensure all periods of sickness are notified to the Trust in accordance with the Managing of Sickness Absence Policy.
  • Maintain up to date clinical skills through appropriate CPD.
  • Participate in training provided by the Trust and be familiar with the Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in under-graduate and post-graduate medical education.
  • Participate in medical audit, multi-disciplinary audit, research, if appropriate, and the clinical governance process.
  • Further training will be provided – both informally and “on the job” by the consultant psychiatrists and access to any formal training courses will be encouraged and supported.
  • Make full use of study leave and participate in the development of guidelines and protocols for use in the Trust as a result of audit, national guidelines etc.
  • In conjunction with colleagues set, monitor and evaluate quality standards for the Old Age Psychiatry Service and ensure that staff adheres to the philosophy and values contained within the mission statement of the Trust.
  • Work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient delivery of services.
  • Attend professional supervision and participate in the induction and clinical support to doctors in Training grades, newly appointed doctors in training and students within the department.
  • Participate in the selection and recruitment of staff in accordance with Trust procedure.
  • CPD/Teaching/Training/Appraisal.
  • The post-holder is expected to participate fully in the local Academic Meeting/Case Conference/Journal Club Programmes. He/she will be expected to undertake regular audit projects and research, if appropriate, under Consultant supervision.
  • The post will be covered by their consultant colleague when the post holder is on leave.
