Contract and hours: Permanent, Full-time (40hpw, 10PA's) A waiting list may be established for the next 12 months should another similar temporary or permanent post arise

Job summary

  • To share in the collective responsibility for the provision of acute medical services within the directorate to provide specialist stroke medicine services.
  • To contribute to the daily management of stroke patients on the ward
  • To contribute to and develop the TIA service
  • To contribute to the development of excellence in clinical practice through audit and participation in clinical and social care governance.
  • Ensure good communication with patients and relatives
  • Participate in the investigation of any complaints within the Directorate
  • Complete clinical incident report forms as per Trust Policy

Key responsibilities

The postholder will:

  • Contribute to the TIA service by triaging referrals and carrying out a specialist doctor led TIA clinic
  • Participate in the hospital’s acute stroke/thrombolysis on call rota for telephone advice and telemedicine (currently 1 in 6)
  • Provide advice and assessment to patients referred to the stroke team from other departments
  • Contribute to the management of hyperacute, acute and stroke rehabilitation patients.
  • Promote and develop multidisciplinary team work within the specialty
  • Work with colleagues in primary and secondary care in the further development of stroke and TIA services in the northern sector of the Western Health and Social Care Trust
  • There will be no care of the elderly rota component to this post
  • Maintain a high level of specialist knowledge in stroke medicine extending his/her professional and management knowledge and skills
  • Fulfil the relevant commitment to continuing professional development and continuing medical education
  • Participate in clinical audit
  • There is scope for the development of a spasticity service and/or to participate in research or clinical supervision or teaching (with additional SPA allocated for these activities)
