Job summary

  • To provide high quality, effective and efficient gastroenterology and endoscopy services within the contract resources available to Western HSC Trust.
  • To provide efficient and effective gastroenterology and endoscopy services to meet the needs of the population.

The role

  • To share in the collective responsibility for the provision of gastroenterology, Endoscopy and general medical services to patients within the Western Trust area.
  • To provide leadership within the speciality team and to contribute to the development of excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and UG and postgraduate training.
  • To provide senior decision making within the gastroenterology and endoscopy services.
  • To contribute to the development in excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • These posts are full time positions and it is anticipated that applicant will express their pre-ferred location between the two acute hospitals.
  • All three positions are 10 PA jobs with additional PA’s available for training, education/ spe-cialist activities (to be determined upon appointment).
  • The Trust would wish to offer all candidates opportunity to specialise in their preferred spe-cialism. Every effort will be made to ensure these opportunities are available.
  • Mentorship is available if required from colleagues within the team or regionally if not available locally. It would also be expected that experienced candidates would be willing to mentor junior colleagues. 

Main responsibilities

  • The prime clinical responsibility is to be accountable for the continuous care of patients within a team setting and as part of this responsibility, undertake shared rota arrangements with col-leagues in post, to provide the highest possible level of senior decision making within Gastroen-terology for patients in the care of the Trust.
  • Promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork in the speciality of Gastroenterology, particu-larly in the management of GI cancer patients through the MDT pathway.
  • Develop of gastrointestinal cancer services, in particular with regard to screening, staging and progressing therapy via the multidisciplinary team structure, to allow an equitable service for pa-tients, and in keeping with the requirements of the Trust-wide and NI Cancer networks.
  • Conduct the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the management of the service in a timely manner.
  • The post-holder will work together with colleagues in the further development of gastroenterology and endoscopy department
  • The post holder will be responsible for providing procedures relating to the specialty and will de-velop same in keeping with medical advances.
  • The Trust plays a significant role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and the post holder will be required to support the supervision and education of junior doctors.
  • To participate in the provision of emergency and elective work of gastroenterology and endoscopy based within the Western Health & Social Care Trust.
  • To provide with the other Consultants the acute emergency gastrointestinal bleeding services operating a system of mutual out of hours cover providing prospective cover for absent colleagues on annual and study leave.
  • Provide evidence-based care to gastroenterology patients within the outpatient, day case and inpatient areas and contribute, as per Directorate policy, to the care of patients with General In-ternal Medicine disorders.
  • Will hold outpatient clinics as required for patients within the specialty group and will be respon-sible along with the other consultants for providing gastrointestinal endoscopy and providing care for general medical and gastroenterology inpatients.
  • Whilst working as the on-call Consultant to be available to provide advice to other colleagues by telephone.
  • To collaborate closely with colorectal surgeons and Gastroenterologists colleagues to expand and further develop gastroenterology and endoscopy services.
  • Participate in audit, clinical governance, appraisal and continuing professional development ac-tivities as agreed by the profession and the Trust.
  • To work collaboratively with neighbouring Trusts in keeping with best clinical practice, regional strategy and Trust policy.
