Location: South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen

Contract and hours: Permanent, Full-Time (37.5hpw) 

Job summary

To lead, manage, co-ordinate, develop and deliver pharmacy patient services and to work with patients, healthcare and other professionals to meet the medication-related needs of patients in WHSCT.

To ensure that pharmacy patient services are delivered to a high quality and in a safe and cost-effective manner, in accordance with relevant national guidelines and legislation

To manage and develop a team of pharmacists and technicians delivering pharmacy patient services to the WHSCT facilities at the South West Acute Hospital

To ensure that drugs and medical/ surgical items are procured in line with relevant regional and national legislation and guidance.

Main responsibilities

  • Provide expert opinion, both within and outside pharmacy, to ensure the safe, efficient and cost-effective procurement and supply of pharmaceuticals (including drugs and medical & surgical sundries) to the Trust.
  • Review the provision of pharmacy Patient Services in line with Medicines Management Controls Assurance Standards, the Medicines Optimisation Quality Framework and RPS Professional Standards for Hospital Pharmacy Services.
  • Provide pharmaceutical professional leadership for the supply of pharmaceuticals through liaison with pharmacy operational services and key individuals in the Trust.
  • Responsible for professional Pharmacy leadership in Patient Services in the South West Acute hospital.
  • Ensure that medicines are managed in accordance with Good Distribution Practice guidelines.
  • Ensure systems are in place to ensure that medicines are used appropriately, safely, and cost-effectively in accordance with Trust policy, standard operating procedures and medicine legislation and carry out routine audit to provide assurance. The post holder is expected to determine how the outcomes are best achieved in specific circumstances.
  • Lead in the ongoing development of automated dispensing, electronic materials management, Accredited Checking Technician Program and other new projects.
  • Support the delivery of integrated medicines management including the use of patients own drugs and one stop dispensing.
  • Lead in the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures within Patient Services across the Trust including routine review and change of skill mix.
  • Ensure robust policies and procedures are in place to effectively manage medicines
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide safe, clinically effective and cost-effective use of medicines in accordance with Trust policy, standard operating procedures and medicine legislation. This will include prescription review, advising on dosage and side effects and on the safe administration of medicines. The post holder is expected to determine how the outcomes are best achieved in specific circumstances.
  • Be responsible for strategic service planning through capacity management, and cover plans for patient services, by liaison with other sections within pharmacy and external to pharmacy
  • Ensure the security of medicinal products in all settings including wards and clinics and the main pharmacy department
  • Promote research activities of team, by identifying areas for audit and service redesign. The post holder will undertake and publish practice research and enable team members to do likewise. The post holder is expected to determine how the outcomes are best achieved in specific circumstances
  • Provide weekend, extended hours and bank holiday working and participate in the pharmacy on call working arrangements.
  • Meet on a monthly basis (minimum) with the Pharmacy Manager SWAH/OHPCC for communication, performance management, problem- solving and forward planning.
  • Provide an effective, efficient and safe pharmaceutical service for patients participating in approved clinical trials ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • To practice as an independent pharmacist prescriber, working within parameters of prescribing agreed by the Trust’s Non- Medical Prescribing Working Group and a supporting governance framework.
