Job summary

This is a replacement post. The successful candidate will work with consultant and non-consultant paediatricians to provide a complete range of acute paediatric services within the Northern sector of the Trust. This will include out of hours cover for acute paediatrics and the neonatal unit. The post-holder will have some responsibility for providing cover to the neonatal service with the support of the neonatal nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, junior medical staff and consultant colleagues.

Currently 1.5 PA’s are provided for SPA. This does not include clinical or educational supervision responsibilities which will be remunerated in addition to this as required.

Main responsibilities

  • Provide paediatric and neonatal services in conjunction with consultant colleagues
  • Assess children where there are child protection concerns
  • Ensure high standards of clinical care by providing clear standards, providing advice and encouraging audit
  • Co-ordinate medical opinion in the best interest of patient care
  • Provide clinical support for all those providing child health services including nursing and allied health professionals
  • Identify unmet need and contributes towards the development of service provision to meet that need.
  • Provide links between hospital, community and primary health care teams.
  • Promote co-ordinated care between agencies with children and families
  • Develop links with the universities.
  • Initiate and participate in the evaluation of preventive health care strategies.
  • Provide medical input into primary, secondary and tertiary prevention services.
  • Will be encouraged to supervise postgraduate students undertaking research projects on health issues in childhood.
  • Will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education in child health.
  • Will encourage relevant research within the Health Service.
  • The Consultant Paediatrician is ultimately accountable to the Trust Board, by whom he/she is appointed. Management responsibility is exercised on behalf of the Trust Board by the Clinical Lead, to whom the Consultant Paediatrician is accountable for purposes of Trust employment policies and procedures. The post is subject to the HPSS terms and conditions as applied to medical and dental staff, and the Consultant Paediatrician is expected to observe agreed policies and procedures of the Trust, which will be drawn up with professional consultation on clinical matters.
  • Participate in the teaching and development of undergraduate medical students and other post graduate clinical staff.
  • Participate in Trust medical staff and other relevant committees as required.
  • Agree an annual Job Plan and work programme with consultant colleagues and Clinical Director/Clinical Lead
  • The successful candidate will help in maintaining guidelines and systems for setting and monitoring standards of care, reviewing effectiveness of practice in light of available evidence.
  • The successful candidate will assist in the development and implementation of systems that measure the level of services providing “best practice “standards.
  • The successful candidate will participate in quality improvement / medical and clinical audit activities and action recommendations to improve the service. A yearly programme identifying priorities for audit will be agreed within the directorate.
  • The post holder will undertake administrative duties associated with patient care to ensure arrangements are in place to meet quality standards.
  • The post holder will work with Consultant colleagues, Clinical Manager, Senior Midwifery/Nursing staff and others in developing and updating protocols, guidelines and other initiatives to enhance services.
  • The appointee will participate in continuing Professional Development and professional appraisal.
